SGS News - Twenty-Eighth & Last Sunday after Pentecost

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Dear Friend of the Saint Gregory Society,

Last week’s bulletin mistakenly announced that this coming
Sunday’s Mass would be sung. As it happens, in accordance
with our “local tradition”, the next high Mass will be on Advent
Sunday.

Also, the long-promised review of the special Christ the King
Mass at St. Mary’s Church will have to give way to a more
modest offering for the time being. We were waiting for a few
more things to share with you in this regard, and if they ever
materialize you will hear about it first in SGS News. For now,
however, we would like to direct you to some beautiful photos
of the Mass taken by Stuart Chessman of the Society of St.
Hugh of Cluny. You may even have already seen them, since
our webmaster was quick to post a link on our website in the
week following the Mass. But if not, please do have a look here!

By our estimates, there must have been around 350 people
in attendance at that Mass, roughly three times the normal
congregation for the noon Mass at St. Mary’s! The officers of
the Society were overwhelmed by the turnout and wish to
thank all of you who made a point of being there. The Pope
has done his part with Summorum Pontificum, and now it is
our constant duty to do ours by bearing witness to our firm
desire to worship according to the traditional liturgical rites
of the Church. The rest is in the hands of the pastors whom
the Motu proprio empowers to attend to our spiritual needs,
and of course, ultimately, in the hands of God. Flectamus
genua!

Our schedule for the next two Sundays is as follows:

* Twenty-Eighth & Last Sunday after Pentecost
Sunday, November 23rd. Low Mass at 2pm, to be celebrated
by the pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Fr. James Richardson.
The second offering will go to support the work of the Saint
Gregory Society.

* First Sunday in Advent
Sunday, November 30th. High Mass at 2pm, to be celebrated
by Fr. Richard Cipolla (St. Mary, Norwalk). The chant schola
will sing the Missa “Orbis factor” (Vatican Mass XI), plainsong
settings of the “Alma Redemptoris Mater” and “Conditor alme
siderum”, and all the proper Gregorian chants.

ALL MASSES TAKE PLACE IN SACRED HEART CHURCH,
NEW HAVEN (COLUMBUS AVENUE AT LIBERTY STREET,
NEAR UNION STATION).

SGS News - Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Dear Friend of the Saint Gregory Society,

Apologies to those of you who are still waiting for the promised
“round up” (i.e. photos) of the special Mass for Christ the King
at St. Mary’s Church — it’ll come as soon as we can muster the
time to put everything together.

It’s not every year that we get to celebrate the dedication of the
glorious Lateran Basilica in Rome, which is of course the Pope’s
own cathedral. Let’s all take this opportunity to renew our prayers
for him and his work, he who has given us so much already in
“Summorum Pontificum”: Dominus conservet eum et vivificet eum!

Our schedule for the next two Sundays is as follows:

* Dedication of the Basilica of Our Saviour
Sunday, November 9th. High Mass at 2pm, to be celebrated
by Fr. John Ringley (St. Lawrence, Shelton). The chant schola
will sing the Missa “Orbis factor” (Vatican Mass XI), plainsong
hymns (”Urbs beata Jerusalem” and “Angulare fundamentum”),
and all the proper Gregorian chants for the feast. The second
offering will go to support the work of the Saint Gregory Society.

* Twenty-Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
Sunday, November 16th. Low Mass at 2pm, to be celebrated
by Fr. Robert Boyd (St. Mary, Norwalk).

ALL MASSES TAKE PLACE IN SACRED HEART CHURCH,
NEW HAVEN (COLUMBUS AVENUE AT LIBERTY STREET,
NEAR UNION STATION).
