SGS News - Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost
Dear Friend of the Saint Gregory Society,
As announced last week, the Feast of Christ the King (October 26th) will
be observed this year at St. Mary’s Church in downtown New Haven with
a traditional Latin Mass at noon. PLEASE NOTE the changes in time and
location for this Mass; the regular schedule at Sacred Heart will remain in
place this coming Sunday, the 19th, and will resume after Christ the King.
Our plans for the feast include a convivial reception with festive food and
drink to match this historic occasion — the first time in some 40 years that
Sunday Mass has been celebrated in the older form in New Haven’s oldest
Catholic parish. During the reception, a talk will be given on Pope Benedict’s
liturgical vision and the place of the traditional Mass in the Church today.
The speaker is Fr. Paul Keller, Vice-President of the Society for Catholic
liturgy, Professor of Theology at Providence College, and former assisting
priest at St. Mary’s parish. If you have been waiting for the right opportunity
to introduce a friend or family member to the traditional Mass, this is it! All
are warmly invited to the Mass and the reception. Please help us spread
the word by disseminating the attached poster and/or hanging it up in public
places near where you live.
Our schedule for the next two Sundays is as follows:
* Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost
Sunday, October 19th. Low Mass at Sacred Heart Church at 2pm,
to be celebrated by Fr. John Ringley (St. Lawrence, Shelton). The
second collection is a special Archdiocesan collection.
* Our Lord Jesus Christ the King
Sunday, October 26th. Solemn High Mass at *St. Mary’s Church*,
Hillhouse Avenue, New Haven, at *12pm*. The celebrant will be Fr.
Richard Cipolla, assisted by Deacon Robert Brunell and Fr. Robert
Boyd (subdeacon). The preacher will be Fr. Joseph Barranger, O.P.
The full Schola Cantorum of the Society will sing Victoria’s Missa
O quam gloriosum, motets by Josquin DesPrez, and all the proper
Gregorian chants. Mass will conclude with Benediction, and will
be followed by a festive reception in the parish hall, during which Fr.
Paul Keller, O.P., will speak about the pope and the liturgy.
NOTE ABOUT PARKING: As many of you will know, there is no parking
lot at St. Mary’s. There are a limited number of spots in front and in back
of the church, i.e. on lower Hillhouse Avenue and on Temple Street
between Trumbull Street and Grove Street. But long-term construction
projects on both of these streets, on the half-block between the church
and Trumbull Street, have made parking more of a challenge than usual.
Have no fear, though! On Sundays all Yale University lots are free and
open to the public. The closest two of these can be accessed off of
Trumbull Street between Hillhouse and Temple (one of them is the lot for
the University Health Services; both are clearly marked with blue signs).
Moreover, there should be plenty of on-street parking within a short walk
of the church, e.g. on Grove Street or upper Hillhouse (which Dickens is
said to have called “the most beautiful street in America”!). So come one
and come all…and come early!
