SGS News - The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Dear Friend of the Saint Gregory Society,

This Sunday marks the first anniversary of the effective date of
the Motu proprio “Summorum Pontificum”. Even as recently as
two years ago, few of us would have dreamed of living to see
this day. A year is, of course, a very short time in the life of the
Church, yet the fruits of the Motu proprio are already evident.
Perhaps *this* is the “new springtime” we had always heard
prophesied with respect to the Second Vatican Council! This
year, let us all keep the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross
in sincere joyfulness and gratitude for the Holy Father’s great gift
to us, redoubling our prayers for his well-being and for the
success of the authentic liturgical renewal that he wills for the
Church.

Sunday’s feast also presents the officers of the Society with a
good occasion to recall our Schola Cantorum’s most recent
recording, “Solemn Mass of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross”,
which was released at the end of last year and has already
earned high praise from both Catholic writers and music critics.
Have a look at the web page for the CD, where you can hear
some of the tracks for yourself and purchase a copy online
through PayPal:

http://www.saint-gregory.org/recordings-publications/holycross/

By the grace of God, we are all already acquainted with the
spiritual depth and beauty of the traditional Latin Mass…but
most of the world is not. There are few better and certainly no
easier ways of introducing someone (a relative, friend, colleague,
your parish priest…) to this treasure of our Catholic faith than to
give them one of our CDs! As the great Michael Davies once
said: “Anyone faced with the question: ‘Why the Tridentine
Mass?’ should reply by playing a St. Gregory Society recording.”

Our schedule for the next two Sundays is as follows:

* The Exaltation of the Holy Cross
Sunday, September 14th. High Mass at 2pm, to be celebrated
by Fr. Robert Boyd (St. Mary, Norwalk). The chant schola will
sing Mass XI (Orbis factor), plainsong hymns, and all the proper
Gregorian chants. The second offering will go to support the work
of the Saint Gregory Society.

* Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Sunday, September 21st. Low Mass at 2pm. Celebrant TBA.

ALL MASSES TAKE PLACE IN SACRED HEART CHURCH,
NEW HAVEN (COLUMBUS AVENUE AT LIBERTY STREET,
NEAR UNION STATION).

SGS News Extra - A great development for the traditional Mass in Connecticut

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Dear Friend of the Saint Gregory Society,

We have received official notice from our friends at St. Mary’s in
Norwalk of a very important development for the traditional Mass in
this area: their regular Sunday morning Mass, which was consigned to
the basement chapel for the first nine months of its existence, is at
last moving upstairs to the main church. Their email is excerpted
below, so read on for more information. Needless to say, many of the
clergy and staff at St. Mary’s first encountered and learned the Latin
Mass through the work of the Society, which from its inception has had
as an integral part of its mission the training of clergy, servers,
and musicians in the traditional liturgy. Fr. Greg Markey, Fr. Richard
Cipolla, and Fr. Robert Boyd, all of whom are stationed now at St.
Mary’s, regularly say Mass for the Society. In addition, several of
the musicians in the St. Mary’s Schola learned to perform the music
for the Latin Mass while singing with the Society’s Schola Cantorum.
And the servers at St. Mary’s were trained by the Society’s MC, Bill
Riccio, both in Norwalk and at Sacred Heart Church in New Haven.

The Saint Gregory Society rejoices with the clergy and faithful of St.
Mary’s on this great occasion: ad multos annos!

—–

“St. Mary Church in Norwalk, Connecticut is pleased to announce
that the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite will henceforth be
celebrated in the upper church at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays. Since last
December, the traditional Latin Mass has been offered every Sunday and
holy day in the lower chapel. Low Mass will continue to be offered in
the chapel every Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Beginning this month,
there will also be a monthly Extraordinary Form Latin Mass at 8:00
p.m. on First Fridays. Every Sunday up to now has taken the form of
sung Mass (Missa cantata); the norm will now be Solemn High Mass.

“To mark this great occasion and the change in the Mass time,
there will be a particularly festive celebration of the Holy Sacrifice
of the Mass this coming Sunday, Sept. 7th. Fr. Greg Markey, pastor of
St. Mary’s, will offer the Mass, with Deacon Stephan Genovese and Fr.
Richard Cipolla as deacon and subdeacon, respectively. The St. Mary’s
Schola Cantorum will sing Thomas Tallis’ beautiful Mass for Four
Voices, with motets by Lasso and Viadana. As always, the Mass will be
followed by a reception.
