SGS News - Corpus Christi

Dear Friend of the Saint Gregory Society,

We hope that you have had a happy feast of Corpus Christi
today! The external solemnity of this great feast will be
observed at Sacred this Sunday in our usual manner, and the
following Sunday we will celebrate the external solemnity of
the feast of the Sacred Heart.

The idea of an “external solemnity” is explained in the rubrics
of the 1962 Missal, and is somewhat different in both letter
and spirit from the controversial practice today of “transferring”
feasts from their appointed days in the liturgical calendar to
other days which are adjudged by the bishop to be more
suitable for their observance. A translation of the relevant
rubrics may be found online here:

Paragraph 356 of this book states: “By the external solemnity
of any feast is meant the celebration of the feast itself without
the Office, for the good of the faithful, either on the day on
which the feast is impeded, or on a Sunday when the feast
occurs during the week, or on any other determined day.”

And now to our calendar for the next two Sundays:

* Corpus Christi
Sunday, May 25th. High Mass at 2pm, to be celebrated
by Fr. Greg Markey (St. Mary’s, Norwalk). The chant
Schola will sing the Missa Orbis Factor, Victoria’s “O
sacrum convivium”, plainsong hymns, and all the proper
Gregorian chants. The second offering will go to support
the work of the Saint Gregory Society.

* The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
Sunday, June 1st. High Mass at 2pm, to be celebrated
by Fr. Robert Boyd (St. Mary’s, Greenwich). The chant
Schola will sing the Missa de Angelis, plainsong hymns,
and all the proper Gregorian chants.

ALL MASSES TAKE PLACE IN SACRED HEART CHURCH,
NEW HAVEN (COLUMBUS AVENUE AT LIBERTY STREET,
NEAR UNION STATION).
