SGS News Extra - SGS priests work to spread the traditional Latin Mass (Part 2)

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

Dear Friend of the Saint Gregory Society,

This is the second of two reports on the efforts of the priests who
serve the Society to implement Pope Benedict’s Motu proprio “Summorum
Pontificum” in their own parishes. The last report highlighted the
activities of Fr. Kevin Fitzpatrick and Fr. John Ringley, and may be
found here. This report concerns the developments down at St. Mary’s in Norwalk with Fr. Greg Markey and Fr. Richard Cipolla.

- - - - - - - - - -

St. Mary Church, Norwalk is pleased to announce that it will be
starting a weekly Missa cantata in the extraordinary form of the Roman
Rite. Beginning on the First Sunday of Advent, Dec. 2nd, the
traditional Latin Mass will be celebrated every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in
St. Patrick Chapel. St. Mary’s is very glad to support the Holy
Father’s great leadership and courage in opening more widely to the
Church the treasure of the classical Roman liturgy.

As you probably know, Fr. Greg Markey, the pastor of St. Mary’s, has
offered the traditional Latin Mass for the St. Gregory Society on a
regular basis these past four years. In bringing the Latin Mass to
Norwalk, Fr. Markey is responding to the requests of a number of
parishioners in the months following the publication of Summorum
Pontificum. Throughout October he led a series of well-attended
classes at St. Mary’s on the motu proprio and the traditional Latin
Mass. This month Fr. Markey has also offered a series of motu proprio
classes in Spanish, and these have been enthusiastically received.

In conjunction with the advent of the traditional Roman Rite, St.
Mary’s is also excited to announce two recent clergy assignments. Fr.
Richard Cipolla, well-known to the Saint Gregory Society as a frequent
celebrant at Sacred Heart, New Haven, has just been assigned to St.
Mary’s, Norwalk, as parochial vicar. Fr. Cipolla, who until now has
been parochial vicar at St. Mary’s, Stamford, brings with him a wealth
of experience in the traditional liturgy, and St. Mary’s is fortunate
to receive him.

In addition, Fr. Paul Check will be in residence at St. Mary’s as he
begins a new assignment as national director of the Courage
apostolate. His arrival at St. Mary’s will be something of a
homecoming; St. Mary’s was his parish before he entered the seminary,
and it was where he offered his first Mass. Both Fr. Cipolla and Fr.
Check will arrive the weekend of the First Sunday of Advent, and will
be instrumental in the celebration of the extraordinary form of the
Mass at St. Mary’s.

Members of the Saint Gregory Society have offered assistance to St.
Mary’s in a number of ways over the past several months as the parish
has been preparing for the first Mass on Dec. 2nd. Bill Riccio,
master of ceremonies at Sacred Heart, has been training twelve altar
boys at St. Mary’s in serving the Mass. These boys traveled to New
Haven several weeks ago to assist at the Society’s Mass for the Feast
of Christ the King. Evangeline Bourgeois, another SGS board member,
came to St. Mary’s this past week and gave a well-received talk to the
Hispanic community on the Latin Mass.

A professional choir under the direction of David Hughes, St. Mary’s
organist & choirmaster, will sing chant and polyphony every week for
the 9:00 Mass in the extraordinary form. (St. Mary’s choir of
dedicated volunteers will continue to sing for the 11:00 Mass in Latin
in the ordinary form.) The traditional Latin Mass will begin in the
newly renovated St. Patrick Chapel under the main church. If it is
evident that there is a “stable group of the faithful” (per the motu
proprio) who attend regularly, the Mass will then move to the upstairs
church. The Masses on Dec. 2nd and Dec. 16th will be followed by a
reception and a short talk by one of the priests, to which everyone is
warmly invited. All are welcome to join the many faithful from
Fairfield and Westchester counties and beyond who will be coming to
Norwalk for the traditional Latin Mass!

SGS News - Twenty-Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Dear Friend of the Saint Gregory Society,

Last Sunday’s anniversary Mass was a tremendous success
in every way. Some 200 people participated devotedly from the
Asperges to the Adoremus, and so many of you remained
afterwards for the reception that we could have filled the room
twice over! The music was stunning, the sermon inspiring, and
Marie Reynolds’ hospitality the equal to it all. If you haven’t yet
noticed it, there was a wonderful comment on the occasion in
the New Liturgical Movement blog by Fr. Thomas Kocik, who
was attending in choir:

http://thenewliturgicalmovement.blogspot.com/2007/11/heaven-on-earth.html

The only proper response to success is gratitude. A special word
of thanks is due to all of you who took the time to come to the
Mass and support the Society’s mission by your presence and
your prayers. In some respects, twenty-one years is quite a long
time, and yet with your continued assistance we can all hopefully
come to see it as just the beginning of something much greater,
one of the tiny mustard seeds from which the “Benedictine reform”
of the liturgy will spring forth in this corner of the world.

Finally, the Officers of the Society are delighted to report that, as
a result of your generosity in the second offering last Sunday, the
majority of the expense of our anniversary Mass has already been
recovered. This is perhaps a good time to reiterate that the Saint
Gregory Society is run on a purely volunteer basis for the benefit
of its members. Every single penny of your donations in support
our common work is used to sustain the traditional Mass in New
Haven and to promote it further afield through our series of
recordings and publications. Hence our successes are yours,
too, so together we should say: Te Deum laudamus!

Our schedule for the next two Sundays is as follows:

* Twenty-Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
Sunday, November 18th. Low Mass at 2pm, to be celebrated
by Fr. Kevin Fitzpatrick (Holy Cross, Fairfield). The second
collection is a special Archdiocesan collection in support of
the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.

* TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS IN WATERBURY
In order to assist our friends in the Waterbury area who are
trying to organize a regular traditional Mass there under the
provisions of the Motu proprio “Summorum Pontificum”, we
would like to bring to your attention a special Mass taking
place this Sunday, November 18th, at 6pm in Immaculate
Conception Church (74 West Main St.). Fr. Richard Cipolla
will be the celebrant and seminarians from the Society of
Saint John Cantius will chant.

* Twenty-Sixth and Last Sunday after Pentecost
Sunday, November 25th. Solemn Mass at 2pm, to be celebrated
by Fr. Greg Markey (St. Mary’s, Norwalk). The chant Schola
will sing Mass XI (”Orbis factor”), plainsong hymns, and all of the
proper Gregorian chants.

ALL MASSES TAKE PLACE IN SACRED HEART CHURCH,
NEW HAVEN (COLUMBUS AVENUE AT LIBERTY STREET,
NEAR UNION STATION).

SGS News Extra - SGS priests work to spread the traditional Latin Mass (Part 1)

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

Dear Friend of the Saint Gregory Society,

We would like to share the happy news of some early steps in the
implementation of Pope Benedict’s motu proprio “Summorum Pontificum”
in our part of the world, in particular those which have been made by
the generous priests who offer Mass for the Society at Sacred Heart
Church, New Haven.

As many of you will know, the longest serving priest on our rota, Fr.
Kevin Fitzpatrick, is pastor of Holy Cross Parish in Fairfield. (What
a great name for a parish in this day!) Whereas many of his fellow
pastors seem to have remained silent on the subject of the motu
proprio, Fr. Fitzpatrick made sure to bring it to the attention of all
of his parishioners. In accord with Article 2 of “Summorum
Pontificum”, he also began to celebrate a “private” Mass in the
Extraordinary Form, i.e. one which does not appear on the regular
schedule. Not surprisingly — as envisioned in Article 4 of the motu
proprio — some of the faithful spontaneously asked to be admitted to
these Masses. Fr. Fitzpatrick was delighted to honor these requests,
and ever since September 24th he has been offering the traditional
Mass every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at noon. If you are in the
area, you are most welcome to attend! Directions to the church may be
found here:
http://www.geocities.com/holycrossrcc/directions.htm

Fr. John Ringley, recently introduced in this email bulletin, is
parochial vicar at Saint Lawrence parish in Shelton and the newest
addition to the Society’s rota of devoted priests. Fr. Ringley has
been offering a class at his parish about the traditional liturgy at
8am Wednesdays and 9am Saturdays. This will continue until further
notice. All are welcome to attend. In addition, he has celebrated
“private” sung Masses at St. Lawrence church on two occasions in the
past few months (Sept. 14th and Nov. 2nd), in preparation for which he
has helped to train the servers and singers. More such Masses are
planned for the evenings of Nov. 26th and 27th. The address of the
church may be found here:
http://parishesonline.net/scripts/HostedSites/Org.asp?ID=2635

And one more thing: whether in Fairfield or in Shelton, don’t be
surprised if you find 15, 25, or even 50 people at these “private”
Masses. As noted above, this very thing is envisioned by the Pope, who
writes in Article 4 of “Summorum Pontificum”: “Celebrations of Mass as
mentioned above in art. 2 [i.e. private Masses] may - observing all
the norms of law - also be attended by faithful who, of their own free
will, ask to be admitted.”

One more such report will follow next week.

SGS News - 21st anniversary Mass

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Dear Friend of the Saint Gregory Society,

This is a final reminder to join us this Sunday for a Solemn Votive
Mass in honor of Pope Saint Gregory the Great, to mark the twenty-
first anniversary of the Society’s founding and to implore God’s
blessing on our continued service to the Church under the new
dispensation of “Summorum Pontificum”. The anniversary Mass is
always a very special occasion in the life of the Society, and this
year, happily, the splendor of the liturgy will be matched by the
conviviality of the reception which Marie Reynolds is preparing for
afterwards.

Needless to say, a special occasion like this provides an excellent
opportunity to encourage your friends and family to come along
and experience the undeniable spiritual riches of the traditional
Catholic Mass and — of scarcely less importance — the friendliness
and good humor of traditional Catholics! Many thanks in anticipation
of your attendance, and for your support of the Society and the
traditional Latin Mass.

Our schedule for the next two Sundays is as follows:

* SGS 21st Anniversary Mass
Sunday, November 11th. Solemn Mass at 2pm, to be celebrated
by Fr. Richard Cipolla (St. Mary’s, Stamford). The full Schola
Cantorum will sing Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli, motets
by Palestrina and Tallis, and all of the proper Gregorian chants.
Mass will be followed by a festive reception to which all are
cordially invited. The second offering will be for the benefit of
the Saint Gregory Society.

* Twenty-Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
Sunday, November 18th. Low Mass at 2pm, to be celebrated
by Fr. Kevin Fitzpatrick (Holy Cross, Fairfield).

ALL MASSES TAKE PLACE IN SACRED HEART CHURCH,
NEW HAVEN (COLUMBUS AVENUE AT LIBERTY STREET,
NEAR UNION STATION).

November 11th!

Apologies for the lateness of this week’s email bulletin. Our
schedule for the next two Sundays is as follows:
